Waris Dirie, a child of Somali nomads who became an international supermodel and UN Special Ambassador for the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation (1997-2003), talked to Africa Regional Services about her efforts to end the practice of Female Genital Mutilation, also known as FGM. Through her Desert Flower Foundation and a feature film by the same name telling her personal story, she strives to raise consciousness and eliminate this appalling practice.
